Food Hiroshima trip, Japan 180324 to 180402

We love Japanese food. Maybe it is quite similar to our daily diet? Rice, soup, sushi. All our favourite. In addition to meals, we also love snacks in Japan. I am not sure why, the cakes and bread sold in Japan is always good. I believe maybe because of the basic ingredients they owned. The flour? maybe.... maybe.
The following are food that we ate and love while we were in Hiroshima from 24 Mar to 2 Apr in 2018. Some gives us good memory and some don't. Try them out when you are in Japan.

1) Mister Donut - You see Mister Donut in most of its Shopping Mall. I started having this while I visited Fukuoka in Oct 2017. We both fall in love with it. The donut is soft and they refill your coffee when you finished. Good service and delicious donut
2) Matsunoya Tonkatsu - Our favourite Japanese fast food ever since we visited Tokyo in April 2017. 1st it is cheap with restaurant standard kind of food. It taste better than those served in Singapore Japanese restaurant. The meat is tender and juicy.  While we were in Fukuoka in Oct 2017, we hunt for this joint and tried its oyster as well. The Oyster was juicy and the pork cutlet is light and soft. So much so that when we bite on it, your teeth just sink into the meat. Delicious. We visited this place in Handori, the one near to GU store. Quite disappointed as the food was so oily. However after the trip, we do realised fried food in Hiroshima tends to be more oily. I guess it is because of the culture here. Anyway, this experience will not deter us from dining at Matsunoya again if we were to visit Japan again. But not in Hiroshima.
3) Shinkansen Bento - When I was young, my siblings and me will always imagine aeroplane that "drop" from the sky and we will have "aeroplane food". Just like what the comics "lao fu zi" shows. We were so innocent as at that time, we were so poor and do not understand anything about aerospace. So much publicity about Japanese JR train bento that when I first visited Japan in Nov 2016, my girls and me went to hunt for bento sold in supermarkets. Taste were so so only. Indeed, we cannot expect much about bento, because these are food packed and eaten not piping hot. Taste will be compromise. However, these food comes handy when you are hungry. For example when you are in Shinkansen, for a long journey and hungry, we can buy them from the push trolley when the train is moving. Experience speaks a thousand words. We took the wrong train and we have to detour unexpectedly. There is a train schedule and if we miss the train, we have to wait another hour. So, I ended up buying this bento to relieve my hunger pangs. Indeed it is very pretty, and I guess, they need to make it pretty cause of the high price and so so taste only.

4) Ramen and Seaweed Udon at Akiyoshido, Yamaguchi - I always tell my hubby, these food are like wonton mee and fish ball mee in Singapore. Ramen is like mee kia and Udon is like our bee tai mak. However, you may realised if you have these in a local ramen or udon stall, the soup tends to be very salty. So much so that I can add 1 bowl of water and still cannot take the saltiness. However, if you have them in a tourist town, the taste seems to be all right and not too salty. Of course the above taste good as we have them in a very typical tourist eatery.
5) Fukuoka-sushi - Everyones favourite. Since we are supposed to visit Uminonakamichi Seaside park and supposed to transit at Hakata station, we decided to pay a visit to this store. We have 3 meals here when we visited Fukuoka in Oct 2017 and we could not find a good sushi restaurant in Hiroshima, so decided to have our fix here. The fishes were big on top of delicious rice were our reason for returning. We normally spent about more than 3000yen here. I think it is worthwhile as we were very satisfied with the quality here.
6) Hagi - Soba with tempura and Udon with egg - Have these for lunch on our day trip to Hagi town. We ate at the tourist information area. Yes, not too salty, cause it is meant for tourist remember. Also it has the orange for the soba, as it is the orange season when we see so many oranges plants in the neighbourhood. The egg white is fluffy, wonder how they made it.
7) Youme Town - Sushi served by Shinkansen train - Honestly we were pleasantly surprised to be served by this train. We travelled via Shinkansen for 5 days and this was the last day of travel for our JR west pass. We happened to come here after our trip to Onomichi and a little lost as we have gotten used to Shinkansen and enjoyed the train ride. The dining experience is great but food wise, so so only. Located on the upper level, where the restaurant is.
8) Miyajima - Snacks - Let me warn you. Snacks can be costly and misleading. We were hungry. But restaurant only open after 11am or 12pm. So we have no choice but to order food from one of the shop. Look at the burger!!!!
9) Udon Hanamura - Another Japanese Fast Food eatery that we must visit in Japan. Look at the price. So cheap. The taste is just right and delicious. My first try was in Osaka in Nov 2016. Then I brought my hubby to have it in Tokyo Apr 2017. He love it and we have at least 3 meals at Udon Hanamura in Tokyo. While in Fukuoka, we were not able to find this shop so we were so happy to find this shop while we were on our way back from Hiroshima Castle. We were hungry and this shop is like "god sent" when it appear in front of us when we just enter Hondori area.
9) Udon Hanamura - 1300 Yen  these and almost cannot finish. Very satisfying
10) Daiwa Ryonet Hotel - Ground Level restaurant - Honestly I am not impress by this but still, it is very tasty especially the fish. Well, the restaurant close only 2am in the morning. In Hiroshima, you see shops closing for the day as early as 6pm. So this is a gem as a tourist. But restaurant serving restaurant food, we will not become our must find food for our next trip.
11) Matsuya beef bowl - You see Matsuya in Tokyo almost everywhere just like Mcdonals in Singapore. I first tried the beef bowl (not here) in Osaka and fell in love with it. My husband also love it when I brought him to dine in Matsuya in Tokyo. We decided to track this fast food shop in Hondori. But we ended up with their seasonal item. Grilled beef. So delicious. We will still look for it when we visit Japan again.
12) Nakau - Another beef bowl shop. I must say this is our "god sent" shop for us as we usually return late from our day trip and here it is, a delicious beef bowl shop located just nearby our hotel and opens late at night. Surprisingly, you see quite a number of beef bowl shop in Hiroshima. Honestly, we do not mind having it every day. Check out what we ate in Nakau.
13) Sukiya Beef Don - Another popular Beef bowl outlet in Hiroshima. We tried it and decided that Nakau is the winner.
13) Hiroshima must eat food - I interpret them as fried egg noodles. The dish that we try cause we need to try. Nice but I think we save our stomach for more delicious food. This is what I think.
14) Snacks from Convenience Store - I always believe that travel is incomplete when you do not know the culture of that place. I am a foodie. So I learn from what they eat. I will always visit their supermarket, look at the kind of groceries they sell. I will also visit their 24 hour convenience stall to buy breakfast during our stay here. I normally will opt for non breakfast rooms so that I can try out their cakes or bread locally. Check out the 3 stores that I love.
15) Aeon Hiroshima- This is our favourite at Aeon Hiroshima. Like I say, we need to know culture through food. Se we visited AEON Hiroshima. Check out the local supermarket and local shopping centre. Check out what other food we ate.
